KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): A significant number of fighters of the Islamic State, also known as Daesh, have made their way to Afghanistaninfo-icon, the United Nations says.

In a report published on Monday, UN sanctions monitors said the insurgent outfit continued to exert its influence in Afghanistan, Libya and elsewhere.

The militant group still has between 20,000 and 30,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria, according to the report, which said Daesh continued to maintain a sizable presence in the two countries.

The sanctions monitoring team submits independent reports every six months to the Security Council on Daesh and al-Qaeda.

About 3,500 - 4,500 Daesh fighters, including some of the key operatives, are currently in Afghanistan and the numbers are increasing. The flow of foreign fighters towards the group had essentially come to a halt, the report added.
