Disqualified candidate closes key road in Balkh

Aug 14, 2018 - 19:38

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): A disqualified candidate and his backers closed the Mazar-Samangan highway in northern Balkh province in protest against the candidate’s removal from the final list.

Asadullah Sharifi from Balkh province was among 35 others who have been removed from the final list of candidates in the upcoming parliamentary election two days.

An angry Sharifi brought along hundreds of his supporters from Khulam district to the Tashqurghan Township on Tuesday to protest against the decision.

Sharifi accused Chief Executive Officer Dr. Abdullah Abdullah of pressuring the electoral bodies to remove his name from the final list of candidates. He warned to keep shut the highway until the government met his demand.

Sharif, a sitting member of the lower house who was seeking his re-election,  is accused of links with illegal armed militias.
