KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Pentagon has honoured three contractors for in going into combat mode in support of US troops in Afghanistaninfo-icon, a military website reported on Wednesday.

With special operations backgrounds, the Defense Department contractors received the Pentagon's highest civilian honour at a ceremony on Tuesday, according to the military.com.

Lt. Gen. Darsie Rogers, deputy director of the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), awarded the civilian Medal for Valor the three men.

Retired Army Chief Warrant Officer 4 Michael Anthony Tony Dunne, retired Army Master Sgt. William Timothy Tim Nix, and retired Army Chief Warrant Officer Brandon Ray Seabolt were given the medals.

Rogers hailed the trio -- working under contract to DTRA as counter-IED specialists or irregular warfare analysts -- as the epitome of what it meant to be a true hero.

The Office of the Secretary of Defense created the Medal for Valor after the 0/11 terror attacks to recognise government servants and private civilians who perform an act of heroism or sacrifice.
