LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): A landmine blast killed four Afghan soldiers including a colonel in southern Kandahar province, where separately but near simultaneously a NATOinfo-icon airstrike killed 13 Talibaninfo-icon gunmen on Thursday, official sources said.

The Afghan National Army (ANA) troops from the 215 Maiwand Military Corps came under the bomb attack in Sarband area of Greskh district before noon Thursday, a source in the corps said.

He said the dead soldiers included Colonel Sher Shah, commander of the Maiwand Corps first battalion. The source said security forces had launched an offensive against the Taliban in the area where the blast took place.

The governor’s spokesman, Omar Zwak, confirmed the blast but said he was not aware about the commander’s death.

Zwak also said foreign troops killed 13 Taliban militants during an airstrike in Anjir area of Nad Ali district before noon on Thursday. Weapons and ammunition belonging to the rebels were also destroyed in the airstrike,

About these incidents the Taliban have so far said nothing, but their spokesman Qari Yousaf Ahmadi on his twitter account says three police guards of the 611 Road area in Greshk district defected to the movement along with a Humvee tank and ten weapons.

A police source confirmed the police guards had abandoned their post and their vehicle was also missing.
