KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Election Support Group (ESG) of ambassadors and foreign organisations have condemned all efforts to impede the work of the electoral institutions to hold timely and credible parliamentary elections in 2018, according to a statement on Saturday.

“The ESG condemns all efforts to impede the work of the electoral institutions to hold timely and credible parliamentary elections in 2018. We call upon all actors to allow Independent Election Commission and Independent Electoral Complaints Commission staff to continue their work without delay,” a statement from ESG said.

The ESG comprising the key donor countries – the European Union, the Governments of Denmark (representing Nordic Plus), Germany, Japan, United Kingdom and United States– as well as NATOinfo-icon and the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistaninfo-icon (UNAMA), has consistently supported Afghan efforts to hold timely, credible and inclusive elections. 

“Elections are a national process owned by the Afghan people in which all political actors, including political parties and civil societyinfo-icon organizations, are stakeholders.”

“We encourage all parties and movements, candidates and their supporters, civil society, and government institutions to support the successful conduct of the upcoming elections. Timely, credible and inclusive elections are fundamental to strengthening democracy, as well as promoting political stability, inclusivity and progress towards peace.”
