Paktia’s Janikhel residents concerned over ongoing unrest

Paktia’s Janikhel residents concerned over ongoing unrest

Aug 18, 2018 - 22:03

GARDEZ (Pajhwok): The ongoing bad security situation in Janikhel district of southeastern Paktia province has concerned local residents who say fighting has been underway between security forces and Talibaninfo-icon militants over the past one week.

Dozens of families have been displaced from Hakimzai and Sulimankhel villages of the district due to the critical security situation there.

Mohammad Gull, a tribal elder of the Sulimankhel village, told Pajhwok Afghan News that Taliban insurgents have been attacking their homes over the past seven days, asking residents to surrender to them.

Saddat Khan, another resident, said militants had planted landmines on the Janikhel-Samkani highway, closing it against traffic.

Naqib Tabasum, a resident of the same area, said people were bearing the brunt of the situation. He accused security forces of not taking action to prevent the insurgents from waging attacks.

But police chief Col. Raz Mohammad Mandozai, who reached the area with fresh forces, said the security forces launched clearing operations on Saturday morning, driving the insurgents away.

He said many armed insurgents were killed, including foreign fighters, in the operations and confirmed security forces had suffered no casualties.
