JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Public representatives on Monday said they were worried about security during the Oct 20 parliamentary and district council elections in eastern Nangarhar province.

The Provincial Council members, including the council chief and his deputy, expressed their concern during a press conference at the PC office in Jalalabad, the provincial capital.

They asked security bosses to give explanation for recent attacks in the city and inform people about their preparations including security arrangements for the upcoming polls.

Two days back, a bomb explosion occurred among supporters of a disqualified Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon candidate Javed Zaman, who were staging a sit-in, killing two people and injuring four others.

PC chief Ahmad Ali Hazrat, referring to the explosion in front the IECinfo-icon office, said if security organizations could not control such a small area, how they would be able to control security situation during the upcoming elections.

He urged security forces to explain the recent attack on the protesters because it took place in an area where two check-posts exist.

His deputy Obaidullah Shinwari expressed similar views and said if security forces could not protect a small gathering, how they would protect large public gathering as part of electioneering.

However, Attaullah Khoyani, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok that measures had been taken to ensure security during the elections. He said the elections would be held under full security measures.

Khogyani said the bomb attack on the protestors was being investigated and the probe’s details would be shared the people later.
