FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): The Nusay district in northeastern Badakhshan province would fall to the Talibaninfo-icon if security reinforcements did not reach on time, local officials warned on Wednesday.

The district chief, Ibrahim Qayyumi, told Pajhwok Afghan News that security forces were targeting Taliban’s positions since 8am this morning to block their advance.

He said exact number of casualties on both sides was not yet known. “About 80 percent of the district areas are under Taliban control and roads in the entire district are closed for traffic.”

Qayyumi expressed his serious concern about the situation and warned if reinforcement were not dispatched quickly through helicopters, the district might fall into the hands of rebels.

He said weapons with the militants were advanced as compared to those with the security forces.

Meanwhile, Nek Mohammad Nazari, the governor’s spokesman, said that public order police would be airlifted to the district via helicopters as soon as possible.
