Mattis pours scorn on proposal for privitising Afghan war

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): A senior Trump administration official has once again scorned a controversial proposal to privatise the war in Afghanistaninfo-icon.

Defense Secretary James Mattis told a Pentagon news conference on Tuesday: “When the Americans put their nation’s credibility on the line, privatizing it is probably not a wise idea.”

Erik Prince, the Blackwater founder, has suggested replacing most US troops in Afghanistan with private contractors -- an idea that has been opposed by Kabul.

US media outlets quoted the defense secretary as saying that the American military personnel remained in the 17-year war to ensure its homeland security.

He added: “This is why we talk about an Afghan-led, Afghan-owned reconciliation process and we believe that the best way to get there is to ensure the Talibaninfo-icon recognise they can’t win on the battlefield…”

Mattis once again urged the insurgents to come to the negotiating table and discuss with the Afghan government the country’s future.
