Thousands of Paktika schoolchildren study under open skies

Aug 30, 2018 - 18:10

SHARANA (Pajhwok): Thousands of schoolchildren attend their classes under the open skies in southeastern Paktika province where 147 out of the total 395 schools are without proper buildings.

A teacher at the Jankhel school of Ziruk district, who wished to go unnamed, told Pajhwok Afghan News that they had been requesting construction of a building for their school over the five years, but to no avail.

He said students could not properly study under the open skies and they felt insecure and often skipped classes.

Bismallah, a student of Sarobi district’s high school, told Pajhwok their school was without a building.

He said their school remained closed when there was wind or rain and the courses were not finished before exams.

Meanwhile, Niak Mohammad, a civil societyinfo-icon activist in Urgon district, told Pajhwok that half of the district’s schools were without buildings.

A number of other residents of the province expressed similar views about the issue.

Deputy provincial educationinfo-icon director Mohammad Karim Atalwal confirmed only 184 of the total 390 schools in Paktika had buildings.

However, he said buildings for 19 schools would be constructed this year and another 153 next year. “This will resolve the issue by 90 percent.”
