Iran FM’s Helmand river remarks spark protest

Iran FM’s Helmand river remarks spark protest

Sep 02, 2018 - 22:11

LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Civil societyinfo-icon activists in southern Helmand province on Sunday staged a protest demonstration against recent remarks by Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif about his country’s share of water from the Helmand River.

Zarif a few days back during an interview with an Iranian TV said they had right over the Helmand’s river water and if the Afghan government did not allow the water to flow into his country, then they would put pressure on Afghanistaninfo-icon under various pretexts.

Zarif did not provide details about the pressure, but he mentioned that hundreds of acres of land had damaged in their border provinces of Sistan and Balochistan where people faced huge problems.

However, a number of Helmand based civil society activists protested against Zarif’s remarks.

Nazar Mohammad Rodi, a protestor and civil societies’ coordination director, said Iranian officials clearly interfered in Afghan government affairs for their own benefits.

He urged the Afghan government to take measures and respond to Zarif’s recent claim.  “The water in Helmand river is not enough water for us, then how can we give a share to them (Iranians).”

A number of other activists expressed similar views and urged the Afghan government not to remain silent about the issue.
