KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): British Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson says Afghanistaninfo-icon-based militants pose a real threat to the United Kingdom.

The Times quoted him as saying on Monday the Islamic State in Afghanistan had established “direct links” with British terrorist organisations.

Last month, 440 British troops arrived in Afghanistan to combat the growing terrorist threat from the insurgents who were regrouping in Afghanistan.

In recent months, the secretary said, there had been “countless times when there have been links back to the UK from terrorists in Afghanistan”.

A small number of British foreign fighters might have joined the Islamic State in Afghanistan, he suggested. “A similar spread of foreign fighters who travelled to Iraq and Syria had appeared in Afghanistan.”

Williamson obliquely blamed Russia for meddling in Afghanistan to disrupt the NATOinfo-icon mission there.
