KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Talibaninfo-icon on Tuesday announced the death of Maulviinfo-icon Jalaluddin Haqqani, a senior leader of the insurgent group, after prolonged illnesses.

Zabihullah Mujahid, Taliban’s spokesman, confirmed Haqqani’s death in a statement that did not provide details about the ailment and funeral ceremony.

Haqqani was an important member of the Taliban leadership council. He had also been the minister of tribal and border affairs during the Taliban regime.

Haqqani had long been ailing. The BBC and Pakistani media had announced his death in 2015.

Tawab Ghorzang, former spokesman for the National Security Council, tweeted that Jalaluddin Haqqani has died in 2007. A Pakistani journalist tweeted Haqqani had died in 2014 but his family and Taliban kept it secret.

He added that the dreaded militant had been injured in airstrike and succumbed to his wounds and laid to rest in Khost. Haqqani was born in 1950 in Paktia and belonged to the Zadran tribe.

He organised the Haqqani networkinfo-icon after migrating to Pakistaninfo-icon in northern Waziristan but the Afghan Taliban always insisted he had not parted ways with the group.

The Afghan government and the United States frequently blame the Haqqani network for deadly attacks in Kabul. Haqqani had two wives -- one of them from the United Arab Emirates.
