US to stand beside Afghans until peace achieved: Mattis

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): US defense chief Jim Mattis, who called on President Ashraf Ghani after arriving in Kabul on an unannounced visit on Friday, said his country would stand beside the government and people of Afghanistaninfo-icon until reaching lasting peace and stability.

The Pentagon chief, accompanied by Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Marine General Joseph Dunford, made the surprise visit to discuss progress on talks with the Talibaninfo-icon with the Afghan leadership.

Mattis, at the head of a high level delegation, called on President Ashraf Ghani at the Gul Khana palace at the Presidential Palace Friday noon, a statement from the palace said.

Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah was also present at the meeting that discussed various issues facing Afghanistan and the region  particularly peace and stability.

The two sides conferred on positive impact of the US strategy on Afghanistan and South Asia, reforms in the Afghanistan security sector and parliamentary, district council and presidential elections, the statement said.

They also discussed the war against terrorism and peace with Pakistaninfo-icon, with Mattis praising the unity government’s efforts at introducing reforms, fighting terrorism and corruption.

The US defense secretary also paid tribute to the Afghan security forces for their matchless sacrifices in the war against terrorists.

Jim Mattis said the US would stand beside the government and the people of Afghanistan until they achieved peace, stability and prosperity.
