PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi has supported Pakistaninfo-icon’s steps towards regulating the legal movement of Afghan refugees at the border.

Nobody would support any illegal move that might trigger security problems, Grandi said, commending Pakistan for hosting three million Afghan refugees for more than 35 years.

Speaking at an event organised by the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) on Friday, the top UN official called on Kabulinfo-icon to facilitate the settlement of Pakistan-based refugees by ensuring peace and stability.

“In a worldinfo-icon of closed borders, where xenophobia is rising and rich countries are turning away migrants and refugees, Pakistan is an extraordinary example,” remarked the head of the UN agency.

The Afghan refugee question was a big part of the world displacement problem, making it one of the most protracted issues, Grandi said. Around 68.5 million people are displaced around the world – out of them 25 million are Afghan refugees.”

The high commissioner raised concerns about Afghanistaninfo-icon’s security situation and the lack of its ability to implement policies, which had resulted in poverty and unemployment.

A positive sign was Afghanistan’s increased dialogue with its neighbours, he noted, saying many issues that were previously confined to public statements could now be discussed constructively.
