Daimirdad district falls, fierce fighting underway

BAMYAN CITY (Pajhwok): Talibaninfo-icon have encircled the Daimirdad district of central Maidan Wardak province, well-placed sources revealed on Sunday.
A wounded security official told Pajhwok Afghan News over the telephone: “Right now three soldiers are in engaged in fighting with the Taliban.”
The district police chief was among several security personnel killed, he said, adding another four had been injured in ongoing clashes.
The militants had ringed the district’s office complex, the source said, as the phone was slammed down.
Haji Ahmad Jaafri, a member of the Maidan Wardak provincial council, confirmed to Pajhwok the falloff all security posts across the district.
“Unfortunately, casualties are high but exact figures are yet to be determined. I have received information regarding the killing of nine policemen, including the district police chief.”
Meanwhile, another source claimed the district had been overrun by the insurgents after fierce clashes with the government forces.
Abdur Rahman Mangal, the governor’s spokesman, said hundreds of Taliban from Logar, Ghazni, Daimirdad and other areas stormed the district building last night.
“Dozens of Taliban have been killed and wounded, with the security forces also suffering casualties. However, exact figures are yet to be known,” he said.
The official added reinforcements were near the district centre, which be purged soon of the rebels. He confirmed the death of the district police chief and four others.
