MAIMANA (Pajhwok): Local officials on Monday said Chahartot area and four security posts in northwestern Faryab province have fallen to Talibaninfo-icon. Seventeen security forces suffered casualties in clashes.

Mohammad Tahir Rahmani, the provincial council head, told Pajhwok Afghan News the militants launched attacks on Afghan forces and uprising members in the Chahartot area of Pashtunkot district on Sunday night.

He said Chahartot area and four security posts fell to the insurgents following the attack, which left nine uprising members and policemen dead. Five others including two commanders were wounded in the battle.

Taliban also killed a police commander they had captured, said Rahmani, who expressed concern over the security situation in the province. He said the issue had been shared with the first vice-president, the chief executive officer and other officials.

He said Maimana, the provincial capital, and neighbouring provinces had become vulnerable after the fall of Chahartot area.

Meanwhile, uprising group commander Mohammad Azim said the bodies of seven pro-government fighters were with the Taliban. The injured including two commanders have been evacuated to hospital in Maimana.

Mulk Aman, one of the wounded commanders, said the battle erupted at around 8pm and continued until 2am. He said he requested many times reinforcements but no one helped them and they finally lost seven fighters.

A doctor at Maimana Civil Hospital, who wished to go unnamed, said they had received nine injured people from the area.

A credible government official, who did not want to be named, alleged Chahartot area was given to the Taliban based on a deal between the rebel group and Mulk Suleman.

He said Suleman was wounded along with four others during a clash with uprising members while traveling to Maimana after the battle with the Taliban.
