PUL-I-ALAM/GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): A battalion commander of the Afghan National Army (ANA) was killed by Talibaninfo-icon gunmen in an ambush in central Logar province, officials said Sunday.

The commander, Toran Zamarai, was on his way to a check post in Khoshi district last night when Taliban ambushed his vehicle, killing him and injuring two soldiers, the Logar governor’s spokesman, Shapur Ahmadzai, said.

Shahid Gul Agha, a resident of the district, said two people were killed and two others injured in the attack.

The Taliban have claimed credit for the attack.

Elsewhere in southern Ghazni province at least a dozen Taliban militants were killed and 15 others wounded in air-and-ground operations in the Giru district late Saturday night, police said.

Police spokesman Ahmad Khan Serat said bodies of three slain rebels were still lying at the clash site. Two Kalashnikovs were also seized by security personnel.

But Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid rejected police claims and said the fighters attacked check-posts in the district and caused heavy casualties to the government forces.

Meanwhile, Ghazni police chief Farid Ahmad Mashal said 11 suspects had been arrested in connection with various crimes during the past few days.

He said the detainees included two policemen accused of harassing people on highways.
