Kabul wants refugees to return from Pakistan in 2 years

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): In line with its policy, Kabulinfo-icon wants all refugees to return in a dignified manner from Pakistaninfo-icon in two years, a diplomat says.

Afghanistaninfo-icon’s Deputy Ambassador to Pakistan Zardasht Shams hoped Pakistan would continue to support the refugees until they returned home.

“We expect Pakistan will extend support during their stay till return. I am speaking on our policy on refugees which has not changed so far,” he said.

Speaking to Arab News on Monday, Shams recalled President Ashraf Ghani’s announcement that refugees would be repatriated in two years.

He added: “We cannot take them (refugees) home by force. Their repatriation will be voluntary. Our policy is that we want the return of all refugees from Pakistan and Iran.”

The deadline for Afghan refugees’ stay in Pakistan expired on Monday. Shams said Islamabad had not yet informed them about a new extension.

However, a decision in this regard would also be applicable to the refugees documented this year, the deputy ambassador added.

Shams said about 880,000 Afghans were documented during the registration drive earlier this year, when a total of 12,162 voluntarily returned to Afghanistan.
