Indonesia asks Taliban to renounce violence, choose talks

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Indonesia president Joko Widodo has asked the Afghan Talibaninfo-icon and other armed groups to renounce violence and join the reconciliation process in Afghanistaninfo-icon, a statement from the Chief Executive Office (CEO) said on Thursday.

President Joko Widodo expressed these views during a meeting with CEO Abdullah, who is on an official visit to Indonesia.

Abdullah thanked the Indonesian government for his invitation and warm reception and offered his condolences and sympathies for the victims of recent earthquake which rattled parts of Indonesia.

The CEO termed relations between Afghanistan and Indonesia as cordial and dubbed the last visit of the Indonesian president to Afghanistan as a sign of strengthening existing relationship between the two brotherly nations.

He stressed more improvement in the bilateral relationship by strengthening economic ties and drawing Indonesian investment into Afghanistan.

The CEO invited the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industries members to visit Afghanistan and see investment opportunities in mining, precious stones, energy and infrastructure sectors.

Abdullah also thanked Indonesia for hosting the three-nation conference on Afghanistan and playing a positive role in the Afghan peace process.

The Indonesian president termed trust-building a fundamental step in advancing the Afghan peace process and said the three-nation ulemainfo-icon conference was a first step in this direction.

“There are more challenges to achieve peace and stability in Afghanistan but there is also no other option than continuing efforts to achieve peace,” he said.

He asked the Taliban and other armed groups to renounce violence and choose dialogue to resolve differences.
