War in Afghanistan must come to an end: Khalilzad

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): US Special Envoy on Afghan Peace Process Zalmay Khalilzad says Kabul and Talibaninfo-icon should name their representatives for talks.

Khalilzad made the remarks during an interaction with media representatives on Monday when urged both sides to choose their envoys for peace negotiation.

The delegation accompanying the newly-appointed American diplomat included officials from the State Department, the Pentagon and the White House.

“We can hold peace talks in any framework and van participate on them, but the process should be Afghan-owned and the war should end,” he remarked.

The envoy added the US wanted to end the 40-year war in Afghanistaninfo-icon and work hard in this regard.

Khalilzad met former president Hamid Karzai, jihadi leader Prof. Abdul Rab Rasool Sayyaf, National Security Advisor Hamdullah Mohib and other security official.

On his arrival in Kabul, Khalilzad met President Ashraf Ghani and his Chief Executive Officer Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, who appreciated the diplomat’s peace efforts

Khalilzad, who arrived in neighbouring Pakistaninfo-icon on Tuesday, will visit the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Qatar as part of his 10-day swing through the region.
