KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): A female Afghan basketball player is among nine new members elected to the International Olympic Committee (ICC).

Samira Asghari, a former skipper of Afghanistaninfo-icon’s womeninfo-icon team, and eight others were elected at the IOC meeting in the Argentinean capital on Tuesday.

Asghari was quoted as saying by AFP: "I am working for the future of all athletes around the worldinfo-icon, especially those in need, like in Afghanistan…

"You know very well that this is not very easy for many reasons in this country," she said, adding she was working for the Afghan National Olympic Committee.

Prince Jygyel Ugyen Wangchuck, president of the Bhutanese Olympic committee, Japan's Morinari Watanabe, head of the International Gymnastics federation, and Brazilian Andrew Parsons, the International Paralympic Committee head, are the other members.
