KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Government officials on Tuesday said the election biometric system was purchased from a reliable German company.

A statement from the Government Media and Information Center (GMIC) to Pajhwok Afghan News said the National Procurement Authority (APA) jointly with the Central Statistics Organization purchased the biometric system from a valid Germany company (DERMALOG Identification Systems) based on a state-to-state contract.

The statement quoted, Elham Omar Hotaki, head of APA, as telling a press conference about the purchase of the system today that they prepared 22,000 biometric devices for the upcoming elections in an urgent situation.

The statement said the Germany's largest biometrics company had assured the NPA about the quality and certification of the devices.

The German government has also assured about quality of the devices and biometric system as Germany’s Ministry of Finance (BUNDESDRUCKERE), also supported and controlled the contract, the source added.

The statement said the 22,000 devices and a central biometric system cost a total of 18 million Euros provided by the government of Afghanistaninfo-icon.

Based on the contract, all materials purchased from Dermalog Identification Systems were a property of the Afghan government after the purchase and it could be used in the future too.

The Independent Election Commission (IECinfo-icon) earlier had also said that elections would be based on biometrics and the system would be purchased from Germany.
