Elections under high security in 8 Helmand districts

LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): The Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon elections will be held under high-security measures in eight districts of in eight southern Helmand province, an official said on Thursday.

The Wolesi Jirga elections are scheduled for October 20 across the country apart from Ghazni province.

Helmand police chief Brig. Gen. Abdul Razeq Yaqubi told reporters in Lashkargah that strict security measures had been put in place for the upcoming elections in Helmand.

He said the ballot could not be conducted in Baghran, Dishu, Musa Qala, Nawzad and Khanshin districts because these districts were with the Talibaninfo-icon.

Yaqubi said security threats in Marja, Nad Ali and Greshk districts existed but the ground for the elections there was paved.

Afghan Army’s 2015th Maiwand Military Corps Commander Brig. Gen. Abdul Hadi Tarin assured the security of polling stations and added the masses could cast their votes without fear.

“Security forces are dispatched to all polling stations and no one could force a voter to cast his/her vote in favor of a specific candidate,” he said.

Attaullah Afghan, the Provincial Council head, asked people to cooperate with security organs in maintaining security on the Election Day.

He called on security forces to ensure the safety of people besides polling stations and their own personnel.

He said some areas in Nad Ali and Nawa districts were in control of Taliban and others of security forces.

Ninety-two persons have been contesting the upcoming elections on eight Wolesi Jirga seats for Helmand. Over 300,000 people are eligible to vote in the province.
