Voting not happened in 244 polling stations nation-wide: IEC

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Independent Election Commission (IECinfo-icon) on Saturday said 244 polling stations could not open in the country due to certain reasons and the voting in these polling stations would take place tomorrow (Sunday).

The Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon election kicked off on Saturday nation-wide apart from southern Ghazni and Kandahar provinces. Technical issues late beginning of the voting process was some of the challenges faced by the election process.

IEC Spokesman Syed Hafeezullah Hashami told Pajhwok Afghan News election related materials to 244 polling stations in 32 provinces could not reached in time and in some polling stations the biometric devices did not function properly.

He said the number of polling station may jump until evening as there would more reports pouring in regarding the polling stations.

Earlier, the IEC head acknowledged some technical problems plagued the voting process and announced that polling stations which were closed for some reasons today would be open tomorrow (Sunday) for voters.

IEC chief Abdul Baday Sayyad confirmed some technical problems in the voting process at a press conference here and said central and provincial IEC officials had been ordered to immediately deal with the problem.

He said the IEC had decided to technically resolve problems where biometric system did not work or not had arrived and if the issue persisted, precautionary tools or closed stations should be used.
