KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Independent Election Commission (IECinfo-icon) on Monday said fraudulent votes would be considered invalid and those involved in rigging would be punished as per the law.

Addressing reporters in Kabul, IEC chief Abdul Badi Sayyad said nearly four million people cast their ballots in more than 4,900 polling stations nationwide.

Of total 4,900 polling stations, ballot boxes from 4,800 polling stations had been transferred to Kabul and the process was underway, he said, adding a committee had been constituted to look into alleged rigging and shortfalls during the elections.

Earlier, some political parties alleged rigging and fraud in the elections by the IEC and said votes that did not go through the biometric system should be declared invalid.

The demands of political parties, Sayyad said the IEC would hold a meeting with political parties on the issues, but in the same breathe he stressed the IEC was independent in its decision making and would decide things in the supreme interest of the nation.

According to the IEC, 92 percent of the votes were polled through biometric system while the remaining went to ballot boxes without biometric verification.
