Mullah Baradar released, shifted to Karachi

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Talibaninfo-icon’s co-founder Mullahinfo-icon Abdul Ghani Baradar has reportedly been released from jail in Pakistaninfo-icon and reunited with his family.

But sources close to the Taliban claim Beradar has been shifted from a jail in Islamabad to a military guesthouse in Karachi.

Mullah Baradar, one of the Taliban’s founding members, was arrested by Pakistan security agencies in 2010 in Karachi. He was deputy supreme leader of the Afghan Taliban at the time of his arrest.

Mullah Baradar held several senior positions in the Taliban government before its fall in 2001. He then fled to Pakistan but was arrested during an operation in 2010.

Pakistani media reported that Mullah Baradar was released on the solicitation of Qatar’s government. Recently, high level delegation of Qatar visited Islamabad and met senior leadership of Pakistan.

According to the Taliban, Baradar’s family and friends could meet him easily now in Karachi guest house.

Afghanistaninfo-icon has often demanded Pakistan release Mullah Baradar but Islamabad would reject it.

Baradar hails from Dehra Rud district of Uruzgan province and belongs to the Popalzai tribe.
