SHARAN (Pajhwok): Some Wolesi Jirga Candidates have claimed security personnel in the districts and remote areas of southeastern Paktika province have encouraged people to vote for specific candidates.

Mahmood Sulimankhel, a Wolesi Jirga hopeful from Paktika, told Pajhwok Afghan News security personnel had campaigned for specific candidates in the Warmi district.

“Our observers reported that security personnel encouraged people to cast their vote for a specific candidate,” he said.

He did not name candidates involved in this practice but demanded investigation into the alleged rigging.

In compliance to the presidential decree, no government officials could campaign for candidates during Wolesi Jirga polls.

Khalid Asad, another candidate from Paktika province, alleged security personnel in the Wazikhwa district encouraged people to vote for a specific candidate.

Police Chief Brig. Gen. Ghulam Sakhi Roghlewani said security personnel have no right to interfere in election.

“Security forces responsibility is to maintain security, if any personnel interfered in the election process in the interest of any candidates they would be referred to the Attorney General Office for legal proceedings,” he said.

Ghusuddin, deputy head of the Independent Electoral Complaint Commission (IECC) said all those complaints would be investigated which are supported by evidence.

Election in Paktika were mostly transparent and the turnout was also satisfactory.

As many as 181,000 people registered as voter out of which 35,000 casted their ballots.
