Kandahar produces 150,000 tons of pomegranates

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Agricultureinfo-icon, Irrigation and Livestock (MAIL) on Monday said southern Kandahar province produced 150,000 tons of pomegranates this year.

A statement from the MAIL’s media office to Pajhwok Afghan News quoted the Kandahar agriculture department director Sayed Hafezullah Sayeed as saying that orchards of the province produced 150,000 tons of pomegranates this year.

He said last year Kandahar had produced 125,000 tons of the fruit. According to him, so far 26,546 tons of the pomegranates had been exported aboard.

Sayeedi added Pakistaninfo-icon, the United Arab Emirate (UAE) and India mostly purchased Kandahar pomegranates.

He said as a result of efforts of the provincial agriculture department and the people of Kandahar more than 8000 hectors of land was cultivated with pomegranates in Arghistan, Arghandab and some other districts of the province in recent years.

He said seven kg of pomegranate was sold for 300 afghanis in domestic bazaar and more than 10,000 individuals have been engaged in pomegranate trade.
