KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): Some tribal elders in southern Kandahar province on Monday held a gathering to announce they would support Dr. Shiada Abdali if he contested the upcoming presidential election.

The elders held the meeting in Aino Mena township in Kandahar City, the provincial capital.

Provincial Council head Haji Jan Khakrizwal told the gathering that after consecutive consultations, they decided to support Dr. Shiada Abdali, a former Afghanistaninfo-icon’s ambassador to India, in the presidential election.

Abdali resigned last month during an official visit by President Ashraf Ghani to India after serving as Afghanistan’s envoy there for six years.

After his resignation, Abdali he felt the need to return to Afghanistan and serve his country from within. “Serving my country for years in India, I felt the need to return and serve my country from within.”

Participants of the gathering in Kandahar City said they had created a commission “People Voice” to hold similar gatherings in Kandahar and others provinces to ask people to support Abdali in the April 20 presidential election.

Niak Mohammad, another participant of the gathering, said it was Gen. Abdul Raziq’s wish to support Abdali as a presidential candidate and they had worked a lot in this regard over the past few months.

Niamatullah Shirdali, a member of the provincial council, said the decision to support Abdali came from the People Voice commission and they all supported Abdali in the upcoming presidential election.

Naqibullah Khan, another participant and resident of central Ururzgan province, said if history was any guide, Kandahar elders had succeeded in their decisions with support of residents of other provinces.

He called on Dr. Shiada Abdali to accept people’s demand and contest the upcoming president election.

Abdul Baqi Noorzai, a resident of Zerai district of Kandahar province, urged former president Hamid Karzi to invite people and announce support for Dr. Shiada Abdali.

A number of other tribal elders expressed similar views and announced their support for Abdali in the upcoming presidential election.
