FARAH CITY (Pajhwok): Twenty border police and 15 Talibaninfo-icon insurgents killed during an overnight clash in Pushtkoh district of western Farah province, a provincial council member said Tuesday.

The public representative, Dadullah Qanay, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the insurgents attacked a border force battalion stationed near the center of the district at around 11pm Monday night. The ensuing clash continued until 2am.

There were 60 border forces in the battalion and 20 of them were killed and a number of others taken hostage by the Taliban. Some more border police were missing and many others have been wounded and shifted to the district center for treatment, he added.

Qanay said the Taliban also seized a large amount of ammunition from the battalion. However, he said the base was now again under Afghan forces control.

Rohullah and Hafizullah, two residents of the area, also said the border police base was captured by the Taliban last night, but they were unaware about casualties during the battle.

Noorulhaq Khaliqi, spokesman for the Afghan National Army (ANA) brigade in Farah, confirmed the attack on the border forces but said he had no further information.

A Taliban spokesman, Qari YousufAhmadi, said 20 Afghan border soldiers were killed and five more were captured by the insurgents. The Taliban also seized large amount of ammunition, he said.
