PUL-I-KHUMRI (Pajhwok): The hydropower dam’s spillway in the capital of northern Baghlan province is close to collapse and needs reconstructioninfo-icon on emergency footing, officials said on Tuesday.

Abdul Qadir, the Afghan textile mill head in Baghlan Marzak-i-district, told Pajhwok Afghan News the Pul-i-Khumri hydropower dam’s spillway was on the verge of destruction.

He said the spillway could not be reconstructed in long years and it could be washed away in fresh flooding.

According to his information, last year there was a plan to rebuild the  dam, but the reconstruction work was delayed until farmers collected their harvests.

He added as farmers had now reaped their crops, the reconstruction work should be launched.

Meanwhile, Haji Mohammad ZahirAhmadzai, the provincial development councils head, urged the government to take measures for reconstruction of the dam as soon as possible.

He said hundreds of houses and thousands of acres of land around the dam would be inundated if the dam’s spillway fully destroyed.

He said the first spillway was destroyed, the water put pressure on the second power dam, which could also become inactive.

He expressed his concern over the dam’s condition and said if destroyed, thousands of hectors of land would be also damaged and people deprived of electricity as well.

Sultan Ahmad Azizi, the provincial power department director, also confirmed the issue and said they had shared the issue with ministry officials and received promises about reconstruction of the dam.
