Anti-Daesh uprising force springs into action in Nazian

Nov 07, 2018 - 20:30

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Hundreds of residents of the Nazian district in eastern Nangarhar province on Wednesday formally launched an armed uprising against Daesh or Islamic State (IS) rebels.

Numbering around 500, the uprising men say they would no longer allow IS rebels to carry out anti-government activities in their areas.

These local residents took up weapons on Tuesday and practically started their operations against Daesh rebels in nearby mountains on Wednesday.

Local officials said Afghan National Army (ANA), border and national police and National Directorate of Security (NDSinfo-icon) personnel are supporting the uprising members.

Provincial intelligence chief Maj. Gen. Nazar Ali Waheedi said the uprising members were being tasked with keeping security of areas cleared of Daesh presence in ongoing operations.

He put the number of the uprising force at 500 and said most of them had their own weapons.

Meanwhile, Nazian district administrative chief Qazi Tariq said people were cooperative with the government in protecting cleared localities.

The uprising members head, Malak Dehqan, told Pajhwok they would no longer allow Daesh rebels to enter their areas and would strongly fight against them in future.
