HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): An Afghan businessman, who has established a saffron processing centre by investing two million dollars in western Herat province, says he would offer jobs to 700 womeninfo-icon at the plant.

Agricultureinfo-icon Director Abdul Sabour Rahmani said the factory would buy saffron flower from farmers and would process and package the product before sending it for export to foreign country.

He said in initial stage 600 kilogram of saffron would be purchased from farmers and would be exported to foreign countries after processing and packaging in the factory.

Rahmani said the saffron processing factory was located in a specific place where farmers could easily bring their yield and get their money.

Haji Qasim Alkozai, owner of the factory, said he established the facility after investing two million dollars.

Women working in the factory said they were happy with the job.  Zahra, one of the women, said: “We are very happy that a work opportunity is available so we can feed our families.”

The saffron processing factory goes functional in Heart at a time when farmers are complaining about a 50 percent decline in saffron prices.
