Noor’s close aide facing trial over corruption charges

Nov 18, 2018 - 20:19

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): A former Public Order Police (POP) commander in northern Balkh province is being tried for alleged corruption, a military official said on Sunday.

Gen. Haseeb Quraishi, who is accused of corruption, was recently appointed as chief of staff for border forces at the Ministry of Defense (MoD).

Earlier, he had served as the POP’s firth brigade commander in Balkh and is considered a close ally of former Balkh Governor Atta Mohammad Noor.

When President Ashraf Ghani removed Noor as the governor of Balkh, Quraishi was one of the two top officers who disobeyed the presidential order.

Hanif Rezae, the spokesman for the ANA 209th Shaheen Military Corps, said Gen. Quraishi had been accused of corruption and referred to the judiciary.

He said Quraishi was accused of selling armored vehicles, keeping them at home, embezzling food and other logistics for security forces and additional charges.

He Quraishi appeared before the special court of the Shaheen military corps on Sunday and provided the explanation regarding alleged corruption charges.

Rezae said the accused would be freed if found not guilty and prosecuted as per the law if found guilty.
