KABUL, according to preliminary results, with six current MPs losing the Oct 20-21 ballot, Pajhwok Afghan News has learnt.
The Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Saturday announced initial results of the parliamentary elections from Uruzgan, Jawzjan, Bamyan, Daikundi and Farah provinces.
According to the results, 21 candidates, including six women, were able to find their way to the new Wolesi Jirga.
According to the IEC, 176 persons, including 10 incumbent lawmakers contested the October 20 polls in these provinces. In Uruzgan 26 persons, in Jawzjan 30, in Bamyan 39, in Daikundi 39 and in Farah 42 persons contested the elections.
In Jawzjan and Uruzgan provinces, the incumbent lawmakers did not contest the Wolesi Jirga elections.
According to the election law, the November 24th results were preliminary and were announced after inspection and evaluation of the Independent Electoral Complaints Commission (IECC).
Shahla Farid, a political affairs expert, told Pajhwok Afghan News that most of the incumbent lawmakers could not succeed in the elections due to their poor performance during their tenure.
Uruzgan:
Three seats, including one for women, are allocated for Uruzgan province in the Wolesi Jirga.
Twenty-six people, including six women, had nominated themselves for the Wolesi Jirga elections in the province.
Of the three, Uruzgan lawmakers Hashim Watanwal was killed, Rehana Azad contested polls from Daikundi and Obaidullah Barakzai from Kabul province.
Bismillah Jan Mohammad, Qudratullah Rahimi and Anosha Barakzai were front runners in the October 20 Wolesi Jirga elections from Uruzgan.
Jawzjan:
Based on population, five seats have been allocated to Jawzjan province in the lower house, including one for women.
In Jawzjan, 30 people, including four women, were all new faces who jumped into the electoral fray as no one from the incumbent lawmakers contested the elections.
But Azizullah Ultafi, a member of the Meshrano Jirga 15th tenure, contested the elections and was among front runners according to the results.
The new results show Batoor Dostum, Baktash Eshgi, Karim Jawzjani, Azizullah Ultafi and Halema Sadaf are leading the polls.
According to the results, Batoor Dostum, son of Gen. Dostum has grabbed most of the votes while his rival Ahmad Eshgi got second highest votes.
Bamyan:
Bamyan province has four seats in the Wolesi Jirga including one reserved for woman. In the Wolesi Jirga elections, 39 individuals, including 11 women, nominated themselves.
According to Saturday’s results, Mohammad Jamal Fakor Behesti, a current lawmaker, won most votes but Mohammad Akbari and Saifura Elkhae failed to make it to the new lower house.
Mohammad Ali Yar, Zaheeruddin Jan Agha, Mohammad Jamal Fakor Behashti, Nekbakht Fahimi have won the October 20 polls from Bamyan.
Jawad Muhabi, a cultural activist, said: “Those who spent money were able to win votes while those with little money were unable to get votes.”
He said educated and qualified people lost the polls and the incumbent lawmakers also failed because they did not perform well during their lengthy tenure.
Referring to Behisti’s victory, he said due to ideological, religious connections, traditional social system in the Waras district and support from the Sadaat tribal, he managed to get many votes.
Daidundi
For Daikundi, four seats, including one for women, have been allocated in the Wolesi Jirga, on which 34 men and five women contested the polls.
Among 39 candidates, three incumbent lawmakers — Syed DaudNaseri, Rehana Azad and SherinMuhsani — contested the elections.
Although one seat is allocated to women in Daikundi, but as a result of high ratio of votes, two women found their way to the lower house.
Syed Mohammad Daud Naseri, Rehana Azad, Ali Akbar Jamshaid and Sherin Muhsani are four frontrunners from Daikundi, according to preliminary results.
Farah
Five seats have been allocated to Farah province in the lower house, including one for women.
Forty-two people, including three women, contested the Wolesi Jirga elections from Farah province.
Mohammad Sarwar UsmanFarahi, Abdul Samai Samim, Musa Khan Nasrat and Humaira Ayubi are current lawmakers from Farah who are seeking their reelection.
Humayon Shahidzada, Abdul Sattar Hussaini, Abdul Nasir Farahi, Abdul Jalil Bakhtawar and Belqis Roshan are five leading candidates from Farah province in the preliminary results of the Wolesi Jirga.
The Wolesi Jirga elections were conducted on October 20 in 32 provinces of the country but extended to the next day due to mismanagement and late beginning of voting.
