Poliovirus detected in 3-year-old Uruzgan boy

TIRINKOT (Pajhwok): A new polio case has been detected in the Charchino district of central Uruzgan province, taking the number of total polio cases to 18 nationwide this year, an official said on Wednesday.

The poliovirus was diagnosed in a three-year-old boy named Rahmatullah in Korak village of the district, said Uruzgan public healthinfo-icon direct Dr. Khan Agha Miakhel.

He said Rahmatullah’s family had been opposed to anti-polio vaccination. A health team has reached the Korak village.

According to the provincial Public Health Department, polio vaccination could not be performed in 90 percent areas of the province due to the Talibaninfo-icon’s opposition to the vaccination.

The latest polio case takes the number of total polio cases in Afghanistaninfo-icon to 18. In neighboring Kandahar province, nine polio cases have so far been registered, making the province the worldinfo-icon’s most dangerous region for polio.
