Violence against women up by 7pc in Daikundi

NELLI (Pajhwok): Violence against womeninfo-icon has increased by seven percent in central Daikundi province this year compared to last year, human rights official said on Monday.

Mohammad Raza Wakeli, acting head of the Afghanistaninfo-icon Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) for Daikundi, said 418 incidents of violence against women had been registered so far this year while last year a total of 394 incidents of violence against women registered with the commission.

He said the number showed seven percent surge in violent incidents against women compared to last year.

The Women Affairs Department also acknowledged increase in violence against women and added the reason behind increasing number of violent incidents against women was growing awareness among women and their willingness to refer to the concerned bodies to register themselves as victims of violent acts.

Women Affairs Director Zakia Rezae said: “Unfortunately, we should acknowledge that even today women in Daikundi facing violence.”

She said 80 attempts of suicide in which two resulted in the death have been registered at the women affairs department.

Provincial Council Member Shema Mohammadi said: “The budget allocated for women support was embezzled or sometimes spent on useless events; therefore, the required result could not be achieved.”

She requested the women to act unanimously and unit against violence the victims of which are women.
