Afghan refugees contributing to Pak economy: Khattak

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): A former senator has stressed implementation of the Citizenship Act to help te Afghans born in Pakistaninfo-icon get equal rights and opportunities.

Afrasiab Khattak, a leader of te Pakhtun nationalist Awami National Party (ANP), dispelled the impression that most of Afghan refugees were involved in criminal activities.

The Afghans were not a burden on Pakistan’s economy, but contributing to it in the form of remittances, trade and taxes, he told a seminar in Peshawar on Tuesday

Speakers at the event -- titled Citizen Right for Afghan Children and Stateless Persons -- called for proper legislation and a clear policy for refugees, particularly the Afghans living in Pakistan for decades.

Pakistan People’s Party leader Farhatullah Babar said though Islamabad was not a signatory to the International Law on Refugees, uet it had hosted millions of Afghans and Bengalis refugees for decades.

An ex-member of the upper house, Babar said: “The statement of Prime Minister Imran Khan to provide citizenship to children of refugees was laudable, but he backtracked on it..,”

A comprehensive parliamentary debate on the issue of refugees was essential to bring in a law filling the vacuum, Babar proposed. “This is a humanitarian issue and should not be politicized.”

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government spokesman Ajmal Wazir said steps were being taken to address the issue of Afghan refugees. Recommendations and suggestions for making a proper policy would be welcomed, he added.
