US Army major charged with killing Afghan citizen

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): A US soldier has been charged with premeditated murder for killing an Afghan man nine years ago, the Army Times reported on Friday.

Maj. Mathew L. Golsteyn allegedly funned down "a male of apparent Afghan descent known as Rasoul" in February 2010, the newspaper said.

The shooting occurred near Forward Operating base McQuery in the Marja district of southern Helmand province. The charge sheet was dated Wednesday but Golsteyn was read the charge on Thursday.

Golsteyn was seeking a job with the spy service seven years ago when e revealed the killing during a CIA polygraph test. He had then called the victim a suspected Talibaninfo-icon bomb maker.

Subsequently, the Army Criminal Investigation Command (CID) initiated an investigation against the major in late 2011, the report added.

The official received an official reprimand In April 2014, but no formal charges were filed at the time for lack of physical evidence.
