Casualties as Taliban, police clash in Kandahar

KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): At least 16 policemen and 12 Talibaninfo-icon insurgents suffered casualties in separate clashes in southern Kandahar province, officials said Sunday.

Kandahar governor’s spokesman, Aziz Ahmad Azizi, told Pajhwok Afghan News that dozens of Taliban militants stormed a border police post in Sra Sahan area of Shorabak district on Saturday night.

Seven border policemen and as many insurgents were killed and five policemen and seven insurgents were wounded in the ensuing battle, he said.

He said four bodies of the assailants were still lying at the scene. The clash lasted until Sunday morning.

However, the Taliban claimed killing 17 border policemen in Shorabak district, with their spokesman  Qari Yousuf Ahmadi claiming the Taliban fighters captured a border post in Sra Sahan area.

He said that the guerrillas also captured a ranger pick-up vehicle and 13 weapons from Afghan border forces. However, Afghan officials rejected his claims.

According to another report, five policemen were killed and a sixth wounded by an infiltrator in Maiwand district of Kandahar.

Aziz Ahmad Azizi said the incident happened in Chopan area of Maiwnad district on Saturday night.

He said the infiltrator managed to escape after the attack. A delegation of police officials had arrived in the area for investigation.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. The group’s spokesman, Qari YousufAhmadi, said two of their infiltrators in Maiwand district killed six policemen and wounded another one before making his escape good.

Taliban’s overnight attacks on Afghan forces posts have recently increased in Kandahar and as a result, the Afghan soldiers’ casualties have increased.

Meanwhile, the Afghan forces have been conducting winter operations against the Taliban in some districts of Kandahar.
