‘Govt is constitutional authority to hold peace talks’

ABUL (Pajhwok): The Peace Consultative Board held its first meeting with President Ashraf Ghani in the chair at the Presidential Palace on Monday and discussed duties and responsibilities of the body, a statement said.

Participants of the consultative body stressed direct talks between the Afghan government and the Talibaninfo-icon, the statement from the Presidential Palace said.

It said the participant agreed that under the Constitution, the authority to lead peace negotiation rested with the government, not political parties.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Abdullah Abdullah said on the occasion any initiative towards peace process would be shared with the masses and nothing would be done behind the curtains.

“All of us should support peace talks in existing circumstances and should not take positions under different titles,” he said, adding the government headship was vital for a responsible peace talks.
