PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): The Pakistaninfo-icon Railways should be assigned with transporting transit trade items to the border with Afghanistaninfo-icon, suggests a retired government official.

In an interview with The News International, the ex-official argued 20-40 wheelers, which were currently being used for goods transportation, were vulnerable to arson attacks.

Te retired customs official, who served at Chaman border in Balochistan, was responsible for facilitating Afghan transit trade. “I witnessed deterioration of Pakistan Railways owing to negligence and ill-conceived policies.

“Afghan transit trade items from Karachi to Chaman are presently transported through privately-owned 20 to 40 wheelers, which are prone to malpractices,” he added.

The huge amounts spent on the maintenance of roads and security of trucks were wasted due to frequent incidents of pilferage, accidents and sabotage, he maintained.

Railways should take over the trade from the present system using convoys on roads for the sake of safety, speedy and economical transportation. “Railways is equipped with tracks, manpower and a warehouse network of a dependable nature.”
