KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Afghan, Iranian and Indian officials have held productive discussions on operationalising the Chabahar port at the earliest possible, news reports said on Tuesday

The Indian government said the first meeting of the Follow-up Committee on implementation of the trilateral Chabahar Agreement was held in Iran’s port city on Monday.

In an important development, India Ports Global Limited opened its office and took over operations at the Shaheed Baheshti Port at Chabahar.

“Positive and constructive discussions were held between the three sides on full operationalisation of the agreement for international transit and transport through the Chabahar Port,” the statement added.

Routes for trade and transit corridors among the three countries were approved at the meeting, which decided to finalise the Protocol on harmonising transit, roads, customs and consular matters.

The three sides decided to hold an event to promote the potential of Chabahar on February 26. A study will be launched on determining measures to make the route attractive, decrease logistic costs and pave the way for operationalisation of the Chabahar Agreement.

The Chabahar port offers India a sea-land access route into Afghanistaninfo-icon through Iran’s eastern borders. India is investing $500 million in developing the facility and a road link from there to Afghanistan.
