Rs1.5m being charged in dowry in Uruzgan

TIRINKOT (Pajhwok): High dowry rates in central Uruzgan province have led many young men into illegal activities and girls to grow old at parental homes.

Local elders say a bride’s family, takes one to five million Pakistani rupees in dowry from the groom. But most of families are unable to pay such huge amounts.

To debate the social issue, a meeting was held in Tirinkot, attended by religious scholars, members of provincial council, government officials, tribal elders and several womeninfo-icon.

Religious scholars said the high rate of dowry was against the teachings of Islam, They urged the institutions concerned to launch public awareness against the unfair tradition.

Uruzgan Hajjinfo-icon and Religious Affairs Director Maulviinfo-icon Hamdullah Abadali said Islam had granted women all due rights.

But unawareness among the people pushed societyinfo-icon toward misfortune, he deplored, urging the bride family to charge 300 dirhams.

Culture and Information Director Noor Mohammad Abdali, member of provincial council Noor Mohammad Haqmal and human rights commission representative Abdul Hadi Bahae urged families to avoid taking high dowry and prevent illegal wedding traditions.

 Tribal elder Malik Sultan said the high amounts of dowry were paid by wealthy families but poor households also did not give away their daughter for low dowry.

Many brides spent their youth at father’s home because of high dowry, he noted.

A young man, who did not want to be named, said he had engaged a girl six years ago. His father had promised the bride 120,000 Pakistani rupees. Now his father is dead and he is unable to pay the amount.

He said: “I have sent my relatives to my father-in-law in order to decrease the dowry to 60,000 rupees but they refused and I’m forced to divorce my fiancé.”
