CHARIKAR and is among the brilliant university students.

The 23-year-old man has set the bar a bit too high for himself. Driven by ambitions, he is outdoing students with no disability. Belonging to Bazari village, he was born with leg disability.

He used his hands walking to the mosque

Nazhand graduated from the Habibullah Khan High School in 2016 and later qualified the university entry test. He is currently a student of literature at the Parwan University.

As he travels to the university, his friends help him cross the road. He has to travel 20 kilometres to reach the university in Charikar — the provincial capital.

“I pay 150 to 200 afghanis daily in transport fare,” he said, adding he looked for a car that carried him to the university along with his wheelchair.

Nazhand complained of the behavior of some of his neighbours, saying he stood firm against all challenges. He is the only educated person in his family. Like many Afghans, Nazhand’s family is up against unemployment and poverty.

His father is a mason who said he with immense difficulty earned money and provided 150 to 200 Afghanis to Nazhand so that he could go to university.

Nazhand gets 60,000 Afghanis annually for his disability from the government said he spent the amount on a library at home.

Adela Hameedi Azen, a university teacher, said, Nazhand was one of the brightest students of the class.

“Abdul Hakeem Nazhand is a role model for all disabled people. At times, disability is viewed as a burden on society. Nazhand, however, has conclusively repudiated that notion. He is an exemplar of a physically-challenged man studying successfully at the highest level — a source of inspiration for society,” she remarked.

Nawad, a classmate of Nazhand, hailed him as a hero, more competent and determined than a normal individual. She also extolled his extraordinary strength of character and level of intellect.

“Nazhand has physical a disability, but he is fine mentally and is better than many of us and other persons I know. He is hardworking and eager to learn more and more,” she concluded.
