Call to facilitate transportation of Afghan transit goods

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): The Pakistaninfo-icon government has been urged to operationalise the Azakhel Dry Port in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province for facilitate the transportation of goods in transit to Afghanistaninfo-icon.

Frontier Customs Agents Group president Ziaul Haq Sarhadi made the demand asked the authorities concerned to resolve the problems being faced by exporters and importers.

In a statement on Tuesday, Sarhadi said the government was duty-bound to take immediate steps for running a freight train and making operational the dry port at the earliest because the business community was already facing many problems due to terrorism.

The Peshawar dry port, he recalled, had been established on an emergency basis in 1986, and the then railways minister had promised expanding it. But 32 years on, the commitment is yet to be honoured.

Sarhadi, who is also chairman of the dry port and standing committees of the Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry, blamed successive governments for ignoring problems of the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
