Ghani, Gen. Milley discuss peace process, US Afghan strategy

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani and the US Chief of Joint Staff Gen. Mark Milley have discussed the Afghan peace process and other regional security issues, a statement from Presidential Palace said on Friday.

Ghani held a meeting with the army chief late on Thursday here. The US top military commander is in Kabul on the head of a high level military delegation.

The positive impact of the US South Asia and Afghanistaninfo-icon’s strategy, an Afghan owned and led peace process and plans for the Afghanistan’s self-reliance had been discussed, the statement said.

The top US general arrived in Afghanistan at a time, when the Afghan government had already sought explanation from the US government over President Donald Trump’s remarks on the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

Trump while chairing the first cabinet meeting of the year said: “Russia used to be Soviet Union. Afghanistan made it Russia, because they went bankrupt fighting in Afghanistan. Russia. So you tend to look at other countries. Pakistaninfo-icon is there. They should be fighting. But Russia should be fighting,” he said.
