Kunduz: Protesting candidates close IEC, IECC offices

Kunduz: Protesting candidates close IEC, IECC offices

Jan 08, 2019 - 16:43

KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): Protesting Wolesi Jirgainfo-icon candidates have closed the main gate to the Independent Election Commission (IECinfo-icon) office, giving the authorities two days to resolve their problems.

The IEC office was closed by male candidates. Female protestors shut the entrance to the local office of Independent Electoral Complaints Commission (IECC).

On behalf of the protesting candidates, Abdul Ghafoor Hotak said they had closed IEC and IECC gates. They had also erected a tent in front of the buildings.

“We had been promised that all votes would be counted, valid and invalid ballots would be separated. But none of the promises has been honoured,” he said.

Marzia Rustami, who represented female candidates for Wolesi Jirga elections, said they had closed the IECC gate.

“Individuals who had never been to Kunduz and did not enjoy the support of even 10 people have emerged successful in the elections,” she alleged.

As election officials in Kunduz refused to comment on the allegations, the governor’s spokesman held discussions with protesting candidates and conveyed their demands to the relevant officials.

“But the commissions are independent in their work and it is up to them how to deal with the protesters’ concerns,” Esmatullah Muradi said.
