Heavy snowfall closes Qunaq Tunnel in Daikundi

NELLI (Pajhwok): The Qunaq Tunnel which connects many districts of central Daikundi province with Bamyan province has been closed for traffic due to heavy snowfall, local official said on Thursday.

Public Works Director Eng. Khudadad Serat told Pajhwok Afghan News that as a result of the heavy snowfall since last night the tunnel had been closed for traffic.

He said the tunnel would be reopened when there is let up in the snowfall.

“There is snowstorm in the tunnel since last night which made it difficult for drivers to see the direction. All preparation had been made and the tunnel would be clear when the snowfall stops.” He said.

According to drivers and passengers around 10 vehicles and some passengers had been trapped close to the tunnel in the snow and waiting for the road to be cleared.

Rahmatullah, one of the drivers said: “The Qunaq tunnel is closed and around 10 vehicles and some passengers had been trapped in the snow near the Joz Bazaar.”

The Afghanistaninfo-icon Metrology Department had already predicted heavy snowfall in Badakhshan, Takha, Kunar, Panjshir, Kapesa, Laghman, Parwan, Baghlan, Ghazni, Daikund and some other provinces of the country on January 10 and 11.
